Epidemiological Survey on Paragonimus Infection in Wando and Bogil islet, Wando-Gun (Cheonnam province, Korea)

Abstract
Authors carried out an epidemiological survey of Paragonimus infection by intradermal test with V.B.S. antigen, and the intermediate host(crayfish) in Wando and Bogil islet, Wando-Gun, Cheonnam province.
The results are summarized as follows:
1. The positive reactor with Paragonimus antigen was 29. 5% from 1, 548 examinees; 31. 8% (284 out of 893) in male and 26.4%(173 out of 655) in female. The highest positive reactors were Buyong-ri(70.8%), Bogil islet among the all surveyed regions, and Yeonghung-ri(63.6%), Gunae-Myon, Wando islet.
2. The prevalences by social strata was 15.2%/(127 out of 838) in school students and 50.5% (105 out of 208) in inhabitants of Wando islet and 64. 5% (20 out of 31) in pre-school children, 45. 8% (76 out of 166) in primary school children, 26. 5% (39 out of 147) in middle school students and 57.0% (90 out of 158) in inhabitants of Bogil islet.
3. In age groups, the highest positive rate(67.6 % was experienced 31-40 years of age group in Bogil islet.
4. Metacercarial positives of Paragonimus were 49.4% in crayfish (Cambaroides sp.). The Buyong-ri stream in Bogil islet showed the highest rate (73.1%).
It is summarized that the Bogil islet is one of the new existing endemic region of Paragonimiasis, and related with the high rate of metacercarial positive of the intermediate host (crayfish) compared with the others known to be endemic areas all over the country up to now.
